Quick Bite: Gradescope

September 20, 2023 • Vivian Hoang

In this Quick Bite, Technology & Innovation Program Manager Pablo Yañez breaks down how to use Gradescope, a free, cross-disciplinary tool for students and faculty that enhances and quickens the grading process.

“One of the really important things that we found with Gradescope is that it saves you time, and it also provides better and quicker feedback to your students on assignments that they turn in.”  – Pablo Yañez

To begin, Teaching & Learning Application Specialist Kristy Walker provides a quick step-by-step tutorial on how to integrate the Gradescope LTI 1.3 with Blackboard for convenient use.

Recently added demo courses like “Assignment Examples” provide further guidance on how to effectively utilize Gradescope and even train TAs who are brand new to Gradescope, Pablo says.

Other new features highlighted in the Quick Bite are:

  1. Answer grouping
  2. Test version grouping
  3. Stickers and emojis
  4. More detailed statistics
  5. Improved user accessibility
  6. An anonymous grading setting

These features streamline the grading process by, for example, allowing faculty to grade by question rather than by each individual exam or generate multiple iterations of the same feedback that can be sent to different students based on their individual test performances.

For faculty who want to more efficiently grade pen-and-paper exams in a virtual setting that benefits both the educator and the student, Gradescope may be the perfect solution.
