STLI Quick Bites Workshop: Generative AI

September 13, 2023 • Vivian Hoang

How can faculty effectively engage students on the topic of ChatGPT? Executive Director Adam Barger answers this question during this week’s Quick Bite, “Start the Conversation: Framing ChatGPT in Your Class.”

During this 30-minute Zoom session, Adam invites faculty across all disciplines to participate in a presentation on how to embrace the use of ChatGPT as an aid rather than a threat to teaching and learning, offering a wealth of actionable steps for faculty to use moving forward.

Some key recommendations include:

  1. Modeling acceptable ChatGPT use to students
  2.  Crafting syllabi with highly specific language regarding classroom policies about ChatGPT
  3.  Prioritizing transparency and purpose in assignments
  4.  Providing students the space to share their thoughts and give feedback on the use of generative AI

Adam also encourages faculty to understand how ChatGPT is being used in their specific academic field, to frame conversations about ChatGPT through their discipline’s signature pedagogy and how ChatGPT can be used to achieve their methodological goals, and to consider students’ future application of learning rather than past methods.

Ultimately, this Quick Bite’s open and flexible approach to the incorporation of ChatGPT into higher education allows faculty to dispel their anxieties over the changing academic landscape and simplifies what can often be an overwhelmingly complex topic into easily digestible, applicable takeaways. From the Quick Bite, faculty develop a deeper understanding of how to use ChatGPT to advance their goals and empower students to think critically.
