Teaching Platforms & Course Design
Blackboard
Blackboard is W&M’s learning management system (LMS) that allows you to organize course materials, communicate with students, manage assignments, and track grades, while also fostering meaningful interaction and collaboration beyond the classroom. Visit Information Technology’s Blackboard Help page to learn how to set up your course site, manage assignments, and effectively engage with students.
Grading and Offering Feedback
Learn how to manage grading procedures and provide meaningful feedback that supports student learning and success. Explore STLIs resources on effective feedback and grading. W&M Information Technology provides detailed resources on using Blackboard Ultra Gradebook, including tutorials on setting up your gradebook, using rubrics, and monitoring student progress.
Student Surveys and Course Evaluations
- Mid-semester feedback survey: Deploying a mid-semester feedback survey to your students is optional, but it’s a great way to gauge the class’s progress and make small course adjustments, helping identify what’s working well and what could enhance learning and engagement.
- End-of-semester course evaluation: End-of-semester course evaluations are an essential institutional measure of teaching effectiveness, providing insights that inform reflection, future course design, and program-level improvement.
Syllabus Design
A syllabus serves as an agreement between instructors and students, outlining expectations, goals, and policies while shaping students’ first impressions of the course, so it’s a good idea to use it as an opportunity to set the tone for the semester and as a roadmap guiding students through course content and activities. Visit STLI’s syllabus resource page to access templates, guides, and examples for creating student-centered syllabi. Be sure to visit STLI’s Syllabus Starter for sample syllabus statements and policies.Â
University Libraries
Adjunct faculty have full access to W&M Libraries’ journals, databases, and teaching resources. Visit the W&M Libraries’ website for consultations, course reserve services, research support, and instructional support.Â
University Registrar
The university Registrar is responsible for providing resources designed to assist instructors with essential academic processes, class lists, grading, course scheduling and understanding the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Visit the Registrar’s webpage to learn how to view and manage class lists, submit final grades, and view student profiles.
