Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Teaching Strategies

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the classroom is essential to making all students feel accepted, comfortable, and welcome. Addressing and accepting differences can encourage students to welcome and recognize the contributions of everyone in the classroom.

Tips on DEI Teaching Strategies

1. Introductions – Having everyone in the classroom pronounce their own name and share their pronouns can alleviate confusion on name pronunciation, show awareness of everyone’s differences, and create a more comfortable space for everyone.

2. Include diverse and culturally relevant material in syllabus – Inclusion can look like many different things, but having the diversity in the classroom represented through learning materials and resources in the classroom can make students more engaged in the content and make them feel represented through the material.

3. Provide open-ended topics for discussion – Open-ended discussion questions can encourage diverse perspectives to come to fruition and allow students to discuss their opinions freely without feeling constrained or judged.
